Bitter orange was brought from Southeast Asia to Italy by Arab traders in the 10th-11th centuries. The name "neroli" comes from Anna Maria de La Tremoille, a 17th-century Princess of Nerola, a town near Rome. She famously used the essence to perfume her gloves and bath, making it fashionable in European high society. Since then, Italy—especially regions like Calabria and Sicily—has become one of the key producers of neroli and bitter orange products,
